Birmingham Wireless Festival 2014

I was just lay in bed and realised I am still yet to write a post about my weekend at Wireless Festival. So, let me turn down the 'new' Young Money album because I can’t pretend I'm Nicki Minaj and write at the same time...

As you may know (or not) I attend Wireless Festival every year, I find the line-up is always a hit and the atmosphere feels like home. I am unsure if that even makes sense but every thing about the festival just pulls me in, from the location to the music to the dodgy 'beef' burgers. The festival is usually located in London, however this year it made a friend in Birmingham and made a bold move up there. You're probably thinking why would you move a festival which is already in a perfect location to... well Birmingham? If you weren't thinking it, I definitely was. And just to let you know, I don't have the answer. But I applaud Wireless for putting on two events because London can be extremely expensive for hotels and travel, especially when a huge event like Wireless is on, you tend to find the prices increase. I saw Birmingham as a cheap alternative to going down to London because I am eighteen years old and simply skint. Therefore I will obviously take the cheaper option and hopefully have just as much fun!

Let me talk about the line-up. When the headliners were released, an impulse in my body made me buy tickets and this is why. Bruno Mars, Drake and, wait for it... KANYE WEST. Although id never seen Bruno Mars before, you can't to miss an opportunity to see Yeezy aka Yeezus. I feel Wireless is renowned for always getting the best headliners, in previous years I’ve seen Rihanna, Drake, Jay Z and Justin Timberlake headline the show. So, I always know that ill be back the following year because they never seem to disappoint. Random but I have a list, which contains artists that I want to see before I die (depressing I know) but I am down to 5 people. Obviously Kanye was top of the list, so cheers to Wireless for letting me tick one more person off my death list!

To follow the headliners, the line-up was pretty good! The problem with having such big artists at the end of each night means the rest of the line-up is sometimes over looked, which is a shame because I love discovering new acts. This is probably one of my favourite things about attending festivals, because I'm always on the look out for a new album or EP to listen to. This year I discovered some new gems such as Alec Benjamin and Jon Bellion – the weekend concluded with frantically searching ITunes and YouTube to find some more music from them. If you haven’t heard of any of them, I highly recommend you go check them out because I’m certain you’ll be hearing from them soon. Something that always happens every year that is really annoying is; they’ll be someone on the line-up from this year that I didn’t see, so ill hear one of their songs, fall in love with it and then realise ‘oh he/she was at wireless’ and then kick myself because I didn’t catch their set! I remember in 2012, The Weeknd played in a tiny tent but at the time I didn’t really listen to him and the next year he was all I listened to. I was so annoyed when I realised he played the festival I could have seen him at.

But give these songs a listen if you’re up for something new:
Alec Benjamin – America (download here: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/mixtape-1-america-ep/id632780175)
Jon Bellion – Jim Morrison (free album download at http://jonbellion.com/)

Despite the festival being everything I could wish for and more, its imperative that at least one bad thing has to happen, right? Let me paint the situation: Its Thursday morning, the day before the festival begins and I arrive back from a driving lesson to twenty-three text messages. Bearing in mind, before I left, I saw on twitter the rumours that Drake had cancelled. But me being me refused to believe it and tweeted out something stubborn like “Drake supposedly cancelled in 2012 and I still saw him. So I refuse to believe anything.” Embarrassing or what because he actually cancelled. I was devastated because I was really excited to see him again, even if it was my fourth time. For me, Drakes music is timeless and as a performer he kills it every time.

I don’t want to end this post on a ‘downer’ so I will say; I had one of the best weekends of my life, being with Holl and Liv, spending too much money on wine, waking up like ironing boards from the hotel beds and just being able to enjoy the music and be free from the stress of A Levels and college!
